Fill Me In English, Beans, Story Swap, Hollywood Shuffle, Fightin' the Power, Impact Hub Oakland, March 2017

Hollywood Shuffle Screening & Story Swap (Fightin’ the Power: Your Means and Tools of Protest)

In this second installment of “Beans”, join us as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Robert Townsend’s “Hollywood Shuffle” (released March 20, 1987). We’ll follow-up with a story swap, allowing attendees share concrete examples of the tools we use to affect change.

Having limited resources and a bounty of drive and creativity, Townsend’s guerilla-style production challenges the cinematic status quo, as he drops the audience into the multi-dimensional life of aspiring actor, Bobby Taylor, who has to navigate Hollywood’s single-dimensioned, mainstream minefield. Will he become famous? If so, at what cost to him, his immediate family, and the larger community?

Townsend brings film to the fight. What do you have? What’s in your toolbox?

Is it:
*Rigorous Academic Instruction?
*Economic Empowerment?
*Legal Aid?
*Environmental Justice?
*A million other things not on this list?

Be ready to share a specific story about some aspect of your efforts to fight the power. If speaking isn’t your thing, or if you want to remain anonymous, you’ll have the option of writing on a card.

Come alone, bring a friend, or come with your honey. Just be ready to have a good time, learn from other folks’ experiences, and give people a chance to learn from yours.
